Describe what you do in your current work situation?
I manage all the suppliers for raw and pack materials that go into all the innovation projects for the refreshments category in unilever that includes Lipton, slim fast and Breyers. I manage the supplier relationship between the suppliers and all unilever stakeholders, prepare monthly forecasts, pick the right suppliers and work on sustainability projects.
Why did you choose engineering?
I had passion for chemistry and I had curiosity for manufacturing processes. I wanted to challenge myself by studying one of the toughest majors in school chemical engineering. I wanted to keep my career options in pharmaceutical, consumer goods, foods and energy industries by studying engineering.
Where did you go to school and what degree(s) do you have?
Northwestern university. Bsc in chemical engineering
What kinds of activities have typically been part of your work?
1. In RD, detergent formula development and deployment for Cif and Domestos brands in unilever. 2. In supply chain, developing price sheet, supplier meetings for innovation projects, team meetings with marketing, finance, planning and RD to discuss project timeline, next steps and updates.
What do you like best about being an engineer?
I have very strong mathematical and problem solving skills that help me solve complicated problems by figuring the solutions by myself. I can come up with answers my faster than non engineers.
Which of your career accomplishments are you proudest of?
I made a switch from RD to Supply chain moving from Istanbul to new York in the same company unilever are only 1.5 year of career professional experience. I saw that I could apply the disciplinary skills that I learned at school both in RD and Supply Chain
Please tell us a little about your family.
I was born and raised in Turkey until college. My mom is a pharmacist who inspired me to go into chemistry. My dad is managing his own business in import and export. My brother is a medical doctor specialized in optalmology.
What are your short-term (1-2 years) and long-term (10+ years) goals?
Short term: Go to MBA and specialize in sustainability projects Long term: help start up companies build management strategies incorporating sustainability and corporate social responsibility
What (or who) had/has the greatest influence on your life choices?
My mom worked as a product manager in one of the biggest pharmaceutical companies in Turkey. She influenced me to focus on chemistry
What advice would you give to a young woman considering a career in engineering?
Engineering is not only a major but It is a science that adds life long skills both for professional and personal careers. The opportunities that you get as an engineer graduate is infinite and not only in the technical area but also social and non technical functions.
Describe something about your life outside of work: your hobbies, or perhaps a favorite book.
I love running and fitness activities outdoors and indoors that make me relax and get my mind off of work. I try to do an activity whether in it is biking, running, stair climbing or swimming, burning energy gives me the relief I need at the end of a work day.
